SUMMARY:NAA: Community Connections Convening
DESCRIPTION:On Oct. 9\, the National AfterSchool Association hosted our inaugural Community Connections virtual convening. The first in a three-part series\, the October meeting gathered together our affiliates\, key partners\, and past participants in the 2024 Workforce Summit to discuss our recently released OST Job Quality Standards and Usage Guide & Assessment. \nIn small groups of like-minded practitioners\, our attendees discussed ideas for increasing awareness of the Job Quality Standards as well as ideas about adopting them into programs\, intermediaries\, and communities. It has been exciting to see how our partner and member organizations have already been implementing the standards: Our new blog series\, Job Quality in Action\, has been highlighting some of the great work that either directly incorporates or aligns with our standards\, including childcare workforce grants in Minnesota and a two-part webinar in Illinois focused on assessing and improving job quality. \nEven if you didn’t participate in the October convening\, we encourage you to register for and join us on the Dec. 4 meeting\, in which we plan to focus on professional development pathways for those working in OST\, including the development of written plans\, support of goal setting\, establishment of apprenticeship opportunities\, and encouragement of alumni involvement. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

SUMMARY:Roads Taken Since Youth Program Participation: Lessons Learned and Ways to Apply Them
DESCRIPTION:Join researchers from the Roads Taken project for a quick road trip as they present action-oriented insights tailored to youth program leaders in afterschool and summer programs. This five-year research project focused on alums from six multi-year\, intensive STEM programs\, primarily serving youth historically underrepresented in STEM fields. The study reached out to alums 15 to 25 years after their participation to uncover long-term impacts. \nKey takeaways for program leaders include: \n1. A conceptual framework that helps explain and study program effectiveness \n2. Program strategies that led to positive long-term outcomes\, including success in STEM academics/careers\, personal involvement\, community involvement\, social-emotional development\, and identity formation. \n3. A practical tool kit for staying connected with youth program alums\, highlighting the benefits of alum engagement\, such as their ongoing role in your program\, creating supportive networks among alums as they move through life and careers\, and gathering valuable data for potential funders. \n4. Resources for more information on the research and recommendations for action \nIn addition to answering questions\, presenters invite webinar participants to share their ideas on the long-term impact they aim to achieve\, strategies for maintaining contact with alums\, and the effects these strategies have on their programs. \nSpeakers: \n\nPriya Mohabir\, Senior Vice President\, Youth Development & Museum Culture\, New York Hall of Science\nCarey E. Tisdal\, Director\, Tisdal Consulting\n\nRegister
