Tech Trek NM Science Camp - Nomination Deadline

AAUW Tech Trek NM 2019 at New Mexico Tech

New Mexico Science and Math Teachers -

Invitation to nominate 7th grade girls interested in STEM to apply for Tech Trek NM Science Camp

Nominations close January 31, 2019

Tech Trek NM invites you and your math/science colleagues to nominate up to 4 girls from your school to apply for Tech Trek

Dear New Mexico Seventh Grade Science and Math Teachers:

AAUW Tech Trek NM (American Association of University Women) is proud to announce that our week-long residential summer camp for rising eighth grade girls focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) will be held June 9-15, 2019, at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM

Tech Trek NM is diverse and inclusive and offers a science camp experience to New Mexico girls who may not have had exposure to developed STEM programs. In 2018, 65 girls from all over our state participated in Tech Trek NM.

The Tech Trek NM environment provides girls with women STEM role models and many opportunities for learning and practicing new skills both individually and as members of a team. Girls take a core class in subjects ranging from astronomy to coding to robotics to forensics. They also participate in field trips and workshops in a variety of areas. All our instructors and staff are women STEM teachers and professionals.  Check out our webpage http://techtrek-nm.aauw.net to learn more.

Tech Trek builds on issues illuminated in AAUW's research report, Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, which demonstrated that camps like Tech Trek increase girls' interest and confidence in STEM fields. You can download the report free at: http://www.aauw.org/resource/why-so-few-women-in-science-technology-engineering-mathematics/.

We ask that you rank (1 being high) your nominees on how they exhibit the qualities on the list below. Please consider what you know about each girl and whether she would truly benefit from a week long summer science camp. The best students academically are not necessarily the best fit for Tech Trek. Some students show their true potential in a setting such as Tech Trek.

If there are other teachers or administrators at your school who you think would be interested in Tech Trek, please share this letter and other information with them.
