The New Mexico Out-of-School Time Network (NMOST) is embarking on exciting work to find solutions to feeding more children and youth after 3 pm and during school breaks. NMOST, in partnership with NM Appleseed, is particularly interested in helping afterschool and summer learning programs provide food to children and youth during school breaks and holidays. The lack of food during these times for thousands of students is identified as a major issue causing children to go hungry for days or months.
The Afterschool and Summer Meals Vista will build the capacity of schools and communities in Central NM to feed hungry children by convening key stakeholders and coordinate services leading to expanded nutrition services at afterschool/summer program sites, including increased access to feeding sites during school breaks and summer. The VISTA will reach out to afterschool/summer learning programs; organize taskforce meetings, and coordinate a plan for increased collaboration and meal distribution. The VISTA will design a collaborative plan for increased food distribution in Central NM, and map existing collaborative efforts around nutrition and afterschool throughout the state. The VISTA will also research and document barriers to food access, including transportation barriers, and design and implement communication strategy (social media, events, radio, webpage).
Central New Mexico has the largest school districts, including Albuquerque Public Schools with 90,000 students, and poverty is high, students are struggling, and a need exists for greater access to afterschool and summer nutrition programs, especially for homeless students. The VISTA will also work with 21st CCLC funded sites throughout the state and provide assistance in obtaining food for their afterschool program participants if needed.
